There is a very large difference between the Italian kitchen and an American kitchen, but you can in fact bridge the gap between the two with a few simple additions. Italians love to cook, and having a well-stocked kitchen is as much an important aid to their love, as it is a status symbol. The better prepared you are, the more likely you will show results in the kitchen. A great dish requires ingredients, if you do not have the simple staples of a recipe you can be in trouble. It is not enough to carry flour and a few basic herbs and spices in an Italian kitchen, you need lots of other items to ensure that you can whip up whatever is desired at a moments notice. The Dry GoodsWhen it comes to the dry goods, few Italian kitchens go without herbs and spices. There are other necessary items however, that makes cooking simple and keep you concentrated. In the kitchen you are trying to emulate you will find these common dry goods: thyme, salt and pepper, basil, red pepper flakes, and rosemary, and oregano. This is actually a small list to go by, and you can add as needed or when you have a chance to stock up on herbs and spices. If you do a great deal of Italian or European cooking, then these few ingredients mentioned are considered a must have for any kitchen cabinet stocking list. Another item that is very common in a kitchen you are trying to create would be bullion cubes in chicken and beef flavors. These will be used as base stock for soups and other various dishes. Wines And Liquors While many would assume that wines and liquors would be used for sipping, many Italians have adopted these spirits as kitchen items for fine cooking as well. Yes you can find these items being used for socializing and after dinner cocktails, but you will find many of the great Italian chefs use them for some of their best dishes. Dry wines and wines that have woody and or nutty flavors tend to be a main staple in dishes that use fish and or chicken. Wines that are smoother and less dry are the ones that you will find people sipping at the table after a great meal. Liquors have been used in fine Italian cooking for hundreds of years, finding a recipe in a cookbook that does not require this ingredient can be tricky. Its All About The Tomatoes While you will find such ingredients as anchovies and sardines in an Italian kitchen, what you may find the most of is tomatoes. There are tomatoes of every conceivable variety, and they can be canned or even fresh. You will need these fine fruits to bring life out of all the fine red sauces that you plan on gracing pastas with. From juicy plum tomatoes to plump steakhouse tomatoes, whatever you need in the form of a tomato can and should at one point or another be placed on your shopping list to store in your new Italian kitchen.
