There Is More To Italian Cooking Than Just Spaghetti

When people think of cooking Italian style they think of dishes like lasagna, pizza, and spaghetti. Little do many non-Italian people know there are so many other types of Mediterranean dishes that are just as Italian. Popular American culture has not given a full representation on what to expect when it comes to real Italian cuisine.

There are so many wonderful cheeses, wines, breads, and sausages to choose from when cooking Italian style and depending on where in the country you are eating or cooking from will determine how it is prepared and if it is even available. Every region is completely different in how and what they prepare. The Northern and Southern parts of the country have been influenced by different cultures and also have different types of foods that are available.

How To, Depends On Where

While Italian cooking can be made very easy, how you will prepare and what you will use in it will depend on what part of Italy you are in. Pasta sauces even vary greatly from region to region, and in some cases town to town. You can even expect to make dishes that require specific noodle types depending on where you are or are cooking from.

In the northern parts of Italy egg noodles are most popular for pasta dishes. In the south, they use hard-boiled spaghetti. Cooking Italian style offers you a huge array of dishes and in a vast amount of varieties. The large variation in cuisine really is about heritage. There are so many cultural influences that make up what Italy and its history are today. Depending on which border you are near, will greatly influence how and what you eat.

Eating In Southern Italy

When it comes to cooking Italian style you can bet Southern Italy has some of the most popular and well know dishes. These dining treats and trademarks include pizza, pasta, and tomatoes. When it comes to cooking these meals you will be seeing and smelling food that most of us think of when hear the words “ Italian Food”.

These dishes were meals that were popular by the poor people of the region. They became widespread due to the availability of the ingredients and the economical cost. These foods have been greatly influenced by the French and Spanish people. Southern Italian cooking is also known for its many fish entrees as well.

The Northern Italian Way

We can thank Northern Italy for such delectables as balsamic vinegar, prosciutto, pesto, and tortellini. You can expect less fish dishes than in the southern portion of the country. Fish is much harder to get in the Mediterranean Sea than in the Atlantic Ocean.

You can however, find many dishes containing mollusks, crustaceans, and sardines. Most of these dishes come out of Venice. You can also expect of Islamic influence as well into the cuisine. The high commerce are has greatly influenced the culinary culture of this part of the country. Cooking Italian can mean so much depending on which region you decide to taste from.
