Gelato Equals Great Italian Ice
Cream
A Treat For Young And Old
Alike
With gelato on the minds of Italians, you can bet that many look to the end of the meal to
actually have something to rave about. Italians love their cooking, however, it is not an easy feat to find one
that will turn down a great bowl of Italian ice cream for dessert or even just a mid day treat.
Gelato comes in virtually every conceivable color and flavor, and there are a few different ways
of preparing this fantastic dessert.
No Matter What You Call It Still Tastes Great
In North America it is called ice cream in Italy it is called gelato, but regardless of where
you are from or what you choose to call it the fact is it still tastes great. Gelato is a very dense form of ice
cream, because as much as 55% of the air has been extracted out of it in the making of the gelato. This gives the
ice cream a much more bold and flavorful taste to it. It also is smoother and heavier than its North American
counterpart. There are lots of flavours that are associated with gelato, and many of which are only available in
this form and cannot be found in North American ice cream.
While the Italians may not always use fresh ingredients to make their ice cream, the result is
always the same due to their production methods. There are in fact a few different ways that this ice cream is
produced, most notable is the difference between the pasteurized method and the non-pasteurized production
methods.
As Expected Various Forms Of Gelato Per Region
While it may seem odd to some that there would be different forms of Italian ice cream specific
to regions, the fact remains that this is true and not unlike any other Italian dish. Italy is thriving with
cultural diversity, and the ice cream should be no exception to this rule.
When you are looking at what the differences are between the north and south of Italy in regards
to their ice cream, you would actually be surprised by what you find. The north tends to lean towards a heavier
gelato that revolves around nuts and chocolates, while the south tends to look for
finer and leaner ice cream tones that are based around fruits. The difference is very apparent, and again all falls
back to region specific needs and desires.
An Ice Cream Misconception
Many people that are not familiar with Italian ice cream would automatically assume due to its
name, that there is or it is made from gelatin. This is not the case however, and when you actually try this ice
cream if you have not had the opportunity you would be very surprised by its texture and taste.
This is a wonderful dessert that is full of flavor, and you would be more than pleased to accept
another bowl once you have indulged in your first. It really doesn’t matter what age you are today; chances are you
enjoy sitting down and eating a great bowl of gelato.
