Spaghetti au gratin

Spaghetti Au Gratin is delicious

Spaghetti au gratin is baked spaghetti at its best. It is a very simple pasta dish to make so there can be no excuse for not trying spaghetti au gratin. Why not make this tasty spaghetti au gratin a teatime treat?

Serves: 4

Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Oven Setting: Preheat to 190C or Gas Mark 5

Ingredients for Spaghetti:

1 lb spaghetti (enough for 4 people)
1 tablespoon salt

Method:

1. Fill two-thirds of a large saucepan with cold water.

2. Add the salt.

3. Bring to the boil.

4. Lower the spaghetti into a large saucepan of the boiling salted water.

5. Stir once or twice with a wooden spoon.

6. Cook for about 10 minutes or according to the manufacturer's packet instructions. Spaghetti should be cooked to "al dente" not soft or overcooked in texture.

7. Quickly drain in a colander.

8. Refresh the spaghetti with a jug of hot water and drain again.

9. Return the spaghetti to the saucepan and cover with warm water while preparing the other ingredients.

Ingredients:

8 oz ham (diced or strips)
6 tablespoons tomato pasta sauce
1 1/2 oz butter
1 oz flour
1 dessertspoon English mustard
1/2 pint water
1/2 pint milk
salt and pepper
3 eggs (beaten)
2 oz grated Parmesan cheese

Method:

1. Butter an ovenproof dish.

2. Set oven to 190C or Gas Mark 5.

3. Mix the ham with the tomato pasta sauce and keep on one side.

4. Melt the butter in a pan.

5. Blend in the flour and cook very gently until straw-coloured and marbled in appearance.

6. Blend in the mustard, water and milk.

7. Season.

8. Stir until boiling.

9. Tip mixture into a bowl and allow to cool.

10. Add the beaten eggs.

11. Drain the spaghetti again and mix in the mustard sauce.

12. Turn into ovenproof dish, layering it with the ham mixture.

13. Cover the top with the grated cheese.

14. Bake in the pre-set oven until set and brown on the top (about 30 minutes).

Tip:

1. Serve spaghetti au gratin with a salad.
