Continuing the short article on waste disposal units

Jamming

Waste disposal units do sometimes jam and it is essential to be able to clear a blockage quickly and easily. All the units on the market have a device which cuts out the motor if it jams and so prevents the motor from overheating. The cause of the jamming then has to be cleared - with a release key or unjamming tool or other device - and a re-set button pressed to start the motor again.

The batch feed units re-start (after clearing the obstruction) when the sink stopper is put in. Some machines have a reversing motor; this increases the life of the unit but - perhaps more important - it means most jamming problems can be cleared simply by flicking the switch to reverse the motor.

Noise

All waste disposal units are noisy - some rather more than others. But the operating time need not be long - a continuous model will grind up about three pound of waste in a couple of minutes; a batch loader is slightly quicker in operating time. The only way to decide if the noise level is bearable is for you to hear a unit operating in a similar sink to the one in which you intend to use it.

Accessories

All waste disposal units are supplied with a sink plug or sink plug and cutlery guard combined. A cutlery guard is really very important, but some models do not have them.

The prices of waste disposal units vary widely, batch feed units usually being rather more expensive. One of the factors to consider when making a choice is the servicing arrangements - if waste disposal units go wrong during use they can get very smelly if you have to wait more than a day or so for the service man to call.
