Gelato di Caffe (Coffee ice ream) is another all favourite classic Italian
dessert. This very popular Italian gelato can be found in every gelateria. Homemade coffee ice cream is full of
coffee flavour and is much better than the manufactured variety. Coffee ice cream (Gelato di
Caffe) can now be made at home using an electric ice cream maker. The ice cream maker will mix together
the ingredients whilst freezing them to produce delightful homemade ice cream.
Serves: 6
Ingredients:
2 cups whole milk
2 cups double cream
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup espresso coffee or strong black coffee
1 tablespoon vanilla extract or essence
8 large egg yolks
Ice cream maker
Method:
1. To a large saucepan, add the milk.
2. Then add the double cream.
3. Add half a cup of the sugar.
4. Add the espresso coffee.
5. Add the vanilla extract or essence.
6. Blend all the ingredients in the saucepan well.
7. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
8. Whisk together the egg yolks and remaining half cup of sugar in a bowl.
9. Gradually whisk the hot milk mixture into the egg-yolk mixture.
10. Pour egg-yolk mixture into saucepan, and whisk.
11. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick enough to coat the back of a
spoon.
12. Remove from heat.
13. Set aside to cool (stirring occasionally) to room temperature.
14. Place plastic cling film on surface of mixture to prevent a skin from forming, and
refrigerate 2 hours.
15. When the coffee mixture is cold transfer it to an ice cream maker.
16. Now follow the instructions that came with the ice cream maker.
17. Transfer the coffee ice cream (Gelato di Caffe) to a plastic container and
place in the freezer.
