<< Previous Page 2 Continuing the short article on dishwashersDishwashers have to be used with a special detergent (which hasn't any foaming properties which would interfere with the washing action), and with a rinse aid to prevent dishes drying with water streaks. With most dishwasher machines you have to put the detergent into a dispenser every time the machine is used. This detergent is easily obtainable from local supermarkets. The rinse aid is usually held in a built-in tank in the dishwasher and is dispensed automatically during the washing programme. Efficiency Dishwashers heat the water to much higher temperatures than it is possible to bear with hand washing, and they therefore achieve very good standards of hygiene. Greasy dishes and most everyday tasks are dealt with easily, although baked-on food, and pans and dishes that need scouring will need a heavier wash programme. The dishes dry off in the hot air after the final hot rinse, but where there are depressions, such as in the bottom of an upturned teacup, the water will remain and will have to be shaken off or dried before the dishes are put away. Running costs These come from the cost of heating the water, from the detergents and the rinse aid; the motors that operate the washing and rinsing action use very little electricity. Most dishwashers serving the average family, use 1 unit of electricity a day. This, of course, depends on the size of the machine and whether it is filled with hot or cold water. Servicing Dishwashers get a lot of hard use - much more than a clothes washing machine - and it is worthwhile signing for a regular maintenance contract. One scheme which covers both routing service visits and emergency calls. The saving is that in emergencies there is then no basic charge simply for calling. When setting out to choose a dishwasher, go to your electricity showroom, a good store, or an electrical specialist, and ask to see and, if you mind about noise, hear each model in operation. Collect all the literature, study it, and compare prices and performance.
