A Trip To The Italian Fish Market
from Italian Traditional Food

The Italian Fish Market Is A Must

There are very few Italians that you will meet over your lifetime that can look you in the face and say that they have no interest in going to the Italian fish market. With its vast coastlines, Italy is well known for the various forms of sea life that can be found for sale in the markets today. The Italians have always fished the coastline for their food, whether it is an actual fish or it is a crustacean.

There are countless recipes today that call for seafood of one kind or another, many of which in fact have been handed down by Italy’s neighbor Greece. What the Italians did from this point was adopt the recipe and refine it to meet their specific needs and taste.

Sardines And Anchovies Are A Big Hit

If you are looking for the most popular fish at an Italian fish market, then look no further than the Sardine and the Anchovy. While on the small side, these fish are used for just about all of the fine fish recipes that come from Italy. These fish are small yet strong in taste, and you rarely miss one of these fish in a meal.

Sardines and Anchovy are fished off the coast of Italy, and you can have a great deal of success when looking for them. This is because they are in abundance in this region, and even though these fish have been a major source of staple for the Italians for centuries they still have not depleted in numbers. You can find these fish in various forms of recipes, from Anchovy on pizza all the way to Sardines in a casserole.

Big Fish, Big Taste

While the smaller fish like the ones mentioned above are great for small dishes, you always want to leave room on the table for the larger fish. There are many larger fish that can be had at the local Italian fish market, and they are all within a reasonable price range.

This makes it possible for not only the wealthy but also the middle class to enjoy what the ocean around Italy has to offer. You will find most of the recipes involving some of the larger fish however, are not actually of Italian origin. Many of the seafood recipes that the Italians enjoy, come from Italy’s next-door neighbor being Greece.

Hard Shell Love Affair

A trip to the Italian fish market can never be without a stop at the hard shell section, or crustaceans. With crabs, giant prawns, and lobster all available to the Italians off of their generous coastlines, it is understandable why they use these great seafood fares so often and in fantastic recipes.

There are many ways to prepare this type of food, and regardless of your choice you can be sure that it will most likely be a family favorite. These crustaceans are used for salads, and cold recipes just as much as hot and exquisite meals.
