Bring The Italian Out In You Through Spices
from Italian Traditional Food

Use more spices

If there is one thing the Italians know about cooking, is just how to bring the most out of a dish through the use of spices. There are a great many different spices that can be added to a dish to change the taste of it, without even breaking a sweat.

While not all spices can be considered appropriate for Italian cooking, many Italians actually experiment with new spices that are not on the Mediterranean spice radar. This is the best ay to find out what will wok in a dish, and what will kill the recipe.

While it may not be a good idea for you to try a new spice for a dish that is very specific and expected to taste a certain way, it does not hurt to try new things in the kitchen when you are just cooking up a basic dish.

Breaking Away From The Spice Mould

Most people including Italians use specific spices for their recipes because that was how they were taught, or because it is an example of habit. Many people have particular spices in their spice rack that are fan favorites, or that are used far more often than others.

A good cook is willing to break from the mould, and actually sample what a different spice will offer to a dish. This is how many of the finest Italian dishes in the world were actually discovered, and this can be just how you find that family favorite at home as well.

It is funny how you are more likely to find a kitchen weekend warrior tossing a little of this and a little of that in a recipe, than you will find someone with vast knowledge and experience with spices. This is mostly because people have become accustomed to a specific taste for a recipe.

Stray from The Norm

Usually you will find the best dish is one that has accidentally strayed from the norm. A spice is meant to enhance a food, and if it comes as a surprise sometimes this can be the best thing for the food itself. There are many variants that come with spices not unlike any other food.

For example if you are looking for a specific pepper that you use on a regular basis, it may not hurt to change that pepper up and see what type of outcome you get. There can be a large difference between a chili pepper and Aleppo pepper.

The latter of the two, is grown in and around the Turkish/Syrian boarders and is a sweet pepper of coarse grade. This can change a recipe for the better, and you may actually find that your family will ask for that recipe more often.

That Little Rack Of Experimentation

Anyone that is a consistent cook in their home, most likely has a small stash of spices lingering around in the kitchen. This rack of spices can be better known as the rack of experimentation, and will bring some of the best Italian dishes to your dinner table if you actually use the guessing game once or twice.

The best dish is one that was stumbled upon, and when you can actually use that knowledge to further enhance a dish in the future you may actually make something unique that no one else knows about.
